According to the World Health Organization, 300 million people around the world have depression. Depression can affect all kinds of people and all ages. There is a stigma surround around depression and mental health and doctors and psychiatrists are so quick to put someone on a pill to help relieve the symptoms that they are feeling. However, pharmaceutical drugs are not working for many people anymore and this is mainly because the side effects are so intense. Also, it has to be noted that anti-Depressants are one of the most money making pharmaceutical drugs out there.
People become dependent on medications
People can become very dependent on anti depressant medications and many people are experiencing side effects such as suicidal tendencies, sleep problems, digestive disorders, decreased sex drive, constant nausea, headaches, dry mouth and cold symptoms to name a few. It becomes a constant ugly cycle of misery and dependency to only find that the depressed person is only able to cope in life rather than to thrive. Before going straight to the man made drugs, try looking at your lifestyle and to nature for healing. Nature gives us many herbs, plants and foods that can heal and help us without the harsh side effects. Turmeric is one of these amazing gifts from the Earth.
Turmeric for depression
There have been scientific studies that Turmeric might be more effective at treating depression than any of the pharmaceutical drugs on the market. “Researchers with the Department of Pharmacology of Government Medical College in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India compared the effects of turmeric and Prozac (fluoxetine), both used together and individually, in 60 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD).” The study found that the main component in Turmeric, Curcumin has potential anti-depressant activity. It raises the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain that are known to cause depression.
Turmeric also has many other benefits including aiding in weight loss, protecting and fighting against the flu, prevents heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. It has even been known to help prevent cancer.
There are many ways to include Turmeric into your daily life. You can sprinkle it on stir fries, add to greens, marinate tofu, chicken or meats with it, add to your scrambled eggs, or add it to salad dressings. My Master Tonic contains turmeric. The tonic can be put on salads, stir fries or used as daily immune support. Or here is a recipe for Turmeric Milk. It is so incredibly delicious!
